I want a WP plugin that automatically rebuilds the URL within…

…a feed to go through the original post and then redirect to the initial link.

It’s really just an ego thing, but I think if a bunch of us in the RE.net were using such a plug-in, it would give me a better picture of how much traffic different people send around.

The reason?   The #1 referrer to 4realz.net is consistently Google Reader… but I don’t know if those referrals are coming from people subscribed to my blog or from links from other prominent bloggers.

In practice, this would mean that if I linked to the homepage of Rain City Guide in this post, the URL in the feed might look something like this:

http://4realz.net/2008/02/04/i-want-a-WP-plugin-that/?redirect=http://www.raincityguide.com/

If something like this already exists, I can’t seem to find it, so please let me know!

  1. Feedburner has this capability and great stats tracking to boot.

If you want to make it really simple with WordPress, make sure to use the FeedSmith plugin to automatically redirect your existing feed URL to Feedburner.

  2. I thought about feedburner even when I was writing this post, but I just don’t like the idea of giving up control over my feed to them. I really want to retain the freedom of messing with my feed as I see fit even if that means I’ll need to miss out on a few easy wins.

  3. Unless you’re comfortable getting your hands dirty in WordPress’ PHP code, I’d argue that it is more flexible and user friendly than what you’ll find in WP.

If you choose to change your feed in WP, FB will automatically pick up any changes you make.

If you haven’t already, you might want to try setting up your feed with them just to poke around at they’re offering. You could do it without interfering with your current feed.

  4. Thanks Pete…

I actually have an account and agree there is some power to their system. I even went so far as to set things up so that people could syndicate 4realz via email for people who want that kind of thing.
